Moritzburg

hunting lodge and game park

Moritzburg, the elector’s hunting lodge in a small town of the same name, is only 15 minutes from Meissen by car. A shuttle bus runs several times daily between both tourist destinations - please ask reception for the bus schedule.

The woodlands and lakes around the small town of Moritzburg were a favourite hunting area of the electors and kings of Saxony, and what began as a hunting lodge was expanded into an impressive Baroque palace in the 18th century, complete with artificial lake, formal gardens, exotic interiors and one of the world’s most important collections of deer antlers.

The fairytale adaptation ‘Three Gifts for Cinderella’ – a staple Christmas movie in most German families – was filmed here in 1973, and an exhibition of the original sets and costumes draws large numbers of visitors every winter. In the summer months, Moritzburg hosts a string of festive events and weddings.
